What is Blender ?

Source: www.blenderclan.org

Blender is to 3D what GIMP is to 2D, no more and no less, in the way that Blender is going to tease the big names of the market like 3DsMax in the same way that GIMP is going to challenge the Photoshop reference. Well yes, on the heels of its modeling, animation, rendering and even real time tools that Blender is placed today as a very reliable "outsider"... Reliable status which is no longer to question since Elephants Dream, first open source short animation film in the history, lights up the  professionalism which can be reached with this program. The second short movie of the foundation, Big Buck Bunny, revealed again the credibility level of the software. Blender sources are available to whom will want to give it an upgrade, and the whole is coordinated by the Blender Foundation to avoid a chaotic development.

Note that Blender runs on Windows, Linux, Irix, Sun Solaris, FreeBSD, and MacOS X platforms ! Furthermore, it will need less than 10Mo of harddisk space, which allows it to start in a very short time compared to other heavy weight in its category (more than 500Mo for 3DsMax as an example !). It uses not much ressources and displays more than decent performance, even on small engines...
